Bike Riding on Sidewalks Ordnance

As of July 2025, Marco Island enforces a maximum 12 mph speed limit for bicycles, e-bikes, and motorized scooters on all sidewalks and shared-use paths to improve safety. Riders must yield to pedestrians, provide audible signals when passing, and comply with all traffic laws.

Key Sidewalk Riding Rules on Marco Island:

  • Speed Limit: 12 mph maximum on sidewalks and shared-use paths.
  • Yield to Pedestrians: Cyclists must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians and give an audible signal (bell or voice) when passing.
  • E-Bike Restrictions: Only Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes are generally allowed on sidewalks; Class 3 (fastest) are designed for road use.
  • Prohibited Actions: Lane-splitting, bypassing traffic signals by using sidewalks, and modifying motors to exceed manufacturer limits are prohibited.
  • Parks: E-bikes are permitted in city parks only when operated manually (without motor assist).
  • Safety: While not explicitly restricted to "no sidewalks" for all ages, riders under 16 should be aware of stringent county rules, and helmets are advised for safety.

Enforcement and Fines

Following an initial period of education,
violations can lead to fines of up to $250 for the first offense and up to $500 for subsequent offenses.
