Enjoy Biking with Safety and Respect

The Shared-Path Safety Equation

Shared-Path Safety = Biker Audible Alert + Pedestrian Action + Reaction

Pedestrians who walk shared-use paths on Marco Island also bear responsibilities to help maintain their safety.

Good Practices Pedestrians Should Follow

  • Maintain Situational Awareness — pay attention to the surroundings.
    • Recognize pedestrians share the paths with others
    • Listen for audible alerts from bikers
    • Check your "6" — take a look behind you periodically
  • Be prepared to move to the side when you receive an audible alert from a biker
  • Generally stay to the right side of the shared-use path
  • Avoid walking 3-abreast
  • Do not make sudden deviations in your general path

A pedestrian following these practices will help bikers to pass them safely

However!!!

Common Sense, Law, and Ordinance require the biker to yield to pedestrians.
